why are women always at Stake?

Recent incident of 23 year old female brutally gang raped by 6 men in a private bus in Delhi, India raised an alarm across the world. Today, I woke up to the news of her death, she has been battling for her life from past 13 days. I have been following up with the news since then. (Details here)

Being a female, how do I react to this heinous act? Do I feel safe to step out? Growing up, my father always made sure that I am home by 6.00 PM. I was against this restriction but he has been right, yes there is no safety for women in India. Even today, no matter how much I claim that India is progressing, one of the major social problems that need to be addressed is– injustice& inequality towards females.

Why were we silent about this for so long? Why haven’t we been protesting on such a large scale then?  In India, rape happens every 2 minutes, only 25% of the incidents are reported, of which only 4% were convicted. The victims would either commit suicide, stay silent due to social stigma attached, or they are suppressed/threatened by the person who committed this crime could be wealthy or politically strong.

Although we boast about having first female prime minister ever, gender equality rights, women’s accomplishments in general.  Did you know, being born as a girl itself is crime in India, considered as a burden in the family? I am not kidding. There are numerous female foeticides ,  female children are restricted from getting educated, throwing acid on girls faces just because they rejected a love proposal, dowry is another problem resulting in many deaths, sexual abuse at public and work places is another issue.  In olden days, the rape victims if unmarried were made to tie knot with the person who did this act – such, is social justice! I wouldn’t be surprised if it is still the case.

The point is, this is such a known fact, a fact everyone is aware of and Indian government is trying it’s best to bring awareness to people (really?, even prisons are not safe for females). But, what do we do if the officers have been compromised and ruled by uneducated politicians? Even, this incident will be stacked into history of criminal records and cycle repeats. I have a strong reason to make this statement as well, not so long ago; the gang who raped were shot to death by police in southern part of India, I was happy to learn and thought it would serve as lesson for people stopping them to think in those lines of doing wrong and getting away. Alas, that clearly did not work.

Thanks to this uproar across the nation against this incident. Rest assured that the accused are severely punished. I personally think, hanging them is not the solution, but surgically removing their sexual parts.. that reminds them throughout their life that they have committed such a crime. This not only scares others to even think in those lines but a punishment well justified. Thoughts?

RIP you girl!

Merry Merry Christmas!

Happy Birthday to Jesus!

and

Merry Christmas to all of my blog visitors! Christmas celebrations have begun right after thanks giving in New York City. I have started collecting (rather clicking) some beautiful x-mas tree pictures and decorations since then. I flew to Florida to escape this cold weather and the decorations were even more creative there. Eye-treat for you all!  (I am yet to visit the giant X-Mas Tree in front of Rockefeller center, watch out – I’ll post as soon as I can.).. And forget not to let me know what your favorite picture from below clicks!

Guns – a threat or a boon?

Gun

Don’t know where to start, how to start and what to speak about this mean machine called “Gun” and the damage it does to lives of innocent people. The incident of “Mass Shooting” by a young adult in Connecticut brought tears to everyone who could feel the pain of losing their own kin, it is disheartening.  There were 20 young students and 6 adults killed in this incident. Who is to blame for this tragedy?  Sandy Hook Elementary School Victims

There have been many tragedies so far in last five years, and what is government doing to avoid this. I feel no place is safe to be in, be it on streets, malls, theaters, schools, universities, temples , homes or anywhere else .  Before we recover from one incident there is another, and all the people who did it were categorized as mentally challenged. Don’t you think, acquiring license for Guns is so easy in this country? Recently, Florida acknowledged the fact that there have been 100k licenses issued to public for their safety.   Should we be proud of this or feel sorry for the irreversible damage it creates. Well, the ratio of people being killed versus people being safe is relatively less and when considered in large scale, it is probably “acceptable”, but when it comes to taking away innocent lives – there should/will be Zero Tolerance.

This incident in Newton, Connecticut, ignited gun-control debate across the nation. Dick’s sport stores have suspended selling their semi-automatic rifles or any kind of sport guns for time being to honor the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.  I can write about it, speak about it and vent out my anger and helplessness over here, but I would soon get over with it. But, it is quite un-imaginable for a family, friend, and relative, neighbor to accept and move on with life. There is always this part of them goes missing and cannot be substituted by anything else in the world. I cannot imagine the pain of a sibling, a best friend; parents for whom those kids are world to them are no more with them except for their memories.  We, as strangers can show support to them and strongly voice out our opinions to strictly restrict guns availability to public. Four of our firm employees lost their family members and our firm is raising $150k funds to support them in their tough times. I could not appreciate more. May their souls rest in peace.

So, how do we restrict guns? Learn from mistakes? All these mishaps happened in last five years have been blamed on mentally disordered people.  But, don’t you think – each one of us is mentally ill somewhere along the line? We speak about ethics, morals, conscience or anything else; you never know how our brain acts in certain situations? Too much of generalization isn’t?  Well, the fact is no one in right sense of mind would commit this kind of heinous act.  (On a side note, I would think Hitler is an example of such mind set).  The whole point is to avoid such things happening in the future.

To conclude – what measures could we take to not repeat this act in the future?  Do you have any suggestions/ideas?

Jersey Journal

Before you assume any thing based on the title, this is not about any news magazine..but about my half-knowledge of this place called “Journal Square” and some more interesting findings.  My colleagues at work reside at journal square and obviously, I thought it is one of the city in New Jersey until this weekend. That is a business district and a metro-station stop name in “Jersey City” ..how ignorant!  wonder why would they always mention that- they reside in journal square.. Now, it does not make any sense… is it for you? (More about Journal Square)

I happened to use NJ transit (a privately owned New Jersey transit system that would take you to different cities in NJ) to visit Jersey Heights with friends, an old place where I remember the owner of a home was complaining about “how real-estate value has been depreciated”, true to the fact, the place seems bit dilapidated, constructed around 1950’s with electric wires hanging out, with no laundry facility within home and congested housing with not sufficient space for parking for an independent home!  But it’s decently affordable and closer to NYC with great frequency of NJ transit services  (a bus every 3 minutes means you can imagine the usage), totally worth living there for bit of savings.  Personally, not my choice specially if you are used to living in better areas!

As we walked around exploring the place, there was farmer’s market a block down. With Christmas right around the corner, to my surprise, they were selling  real “Christmas Trees” instead of the so-many-artificial-trees that I see everyday in NYC . Clicked few pictures for you to view them as well.

Then we were off to Jersey City, yes to Journal Square and to an Indian Street on Newark Avenue. The whole street just resembles like an any other street in India, colorful, bright, tad bit dis-organized, bit messy and best place to have great Indian food. Paradise, one of the Indian restaurant on that street specialized in variety of  “Hyderabadi – dum Biryani’s'”, a well known delicacy.. a must to have. I have never tasted anything better than this until now in New York City. If you get a chance to be there, do not miss a chance.

Some more pictures from that street, the picture below indicates a kind of decoration, you usually find in India during Independence day celebration or if there are any political rally’s.

Newark Avenue in Jersey City, surprisingly the street is clean. I usually do not have a good opinion about cleanliness on Indian streets in United states, they are usually dirty and most of the times they are! May be it’s the rain that caused this clean sweep of the area. Perhaps!

I know, what do you like to do after you are done with meal.. eat sweet pan.. Here you go!, wonder why Narendra Modi’s poster is hanging in there (he is one of the fantastic chief minister of a Gujarath state in India).

How to get there from NYC – Penn Station , take PATH to Journal Square, step out and walk to Newark Ave for Great Indian food!

Another interesting fact, I took the literal meaning for “PATH” as path, but it is in fact “Port Authority Trans-Hudson”, this connects NJ and NY via Hudson River..hence the name.  Please correct me if it is not what it is!
